for a house. The answer depends on a number of variables and can only be
answered by analyzing what is best for your needs in a property. Orientation
specifically refers to which way the property faces the prevailing winds and or
sun or lack of sun. The time of the day, year and or season may change your
perception of a specific orientation. It is wise to perceive the house at
different times of the day and in different seasons.
If you are installing a pool, you probably
do not want the pool’s primary orientation to the North. If you want the
kitchen sunny and bright in the morning you do want an Eastern exposure for the
kitchen. If you plan to maximize the potential to utilize passive solar energy
you’ll want to employ windowed Southern orientation. You may enjoy relaxing on
your patio or deck and love to entertain outdoors or have a special vegetable
garden that needs a certain orientation. All are considerations.
Natural inside light and orientation are
also worthy of consideration. Will skylights brighten interior corridors and
bathrooms? Will a very bright orientation fade the carpet and or furniture? Do
you have indoor plants? If you are building a home, the lie of the land may also
be important. How does the topography of surrounding land effect yours? How is
the drainage?
Directing your feet to the sunny side of the
street may not always be the correct choice.
